Frequently Asked Questions
What is Counselling?
Counselling offers a safe and supportive environment in which you can bring issues that may be distressing or confusing you. Talking through these issues in this environment can help you to gain a better understanding of yourself and the issues that may be causing you to struggle and often result in physical or emotional symptoms.
What is Hypnotherapy?
In 1955, the British Medical Association (BMA) endorsed its practice in medical school education. Today, hypnotherapy has a fine body of evidence to support it. So much so, that even the NHS is now holding it in high regard.
Hypnotherapy is a form of psychotherapy used to create subconscious change in a patient in the form of new responses, thoughts, attitudes, behaviors or feelings. It is an altered state of consciousness in which it is possible to communicate with the subconscious mind. In hypnosis your unconscious mind becomes very receptive to positive suggestions. Especially when those suggestions are tied to a goal you already know you want to achieve.
In fact many people experience this state of mind on a fairly regular basis. Have you ever been driving somewhere and get to your destination but can't really remember much about the journey? This is a similar state of mind to hypnosis. Your attention is completely captured and everyday reality fades into the background as your mind carries you away to a different world of the imagination.
Hypnotherapy has been proven to be very effective for helping a number of areas. Hypnosis helps people to manage their lives, achieve their goals and eliminate unwanted habits, anxiety, fears or phobias. Hypnosis can help to relieve pain and can be used in preparation for and recovery from general surgery. It can increase motivation and improve confidence and self esteem. Throughout history and across many cultures hypnosis has been used to relax and for pain managment and healing.
How will Counselling/Hypnotherapy help me?
Counselling is an opportunity for you to talk to a professional therapist to help you understand yourself and your situation. This might involve reflecting on your life experiences and your responses to new ones. The counsellor will also help you to identify what changes in life style could reduce any distress you feel, and to support you as you consider how to do this. Depending on what you are able to share, the counsellor works with you to explore how you can progress towards living in a way that is more satisfactory and resourceful for you.
Not everyone feels comfortable in sharing everything so for an alternative approach I can work content free with a healing technique to help you move on from traumatic experiences. This technique can also be good in working with teenagers or those uncomfortable with traditional techniuqes.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions we have depends on the complexity of the issues along with the number of issues that you would like to work on. As a guide if you came to see me for Anxiety for example, I have a very successful four session programme that I typically use and tailor to your specific needs. A public speaking fear or spider phobia may only take a couple of sessions.
Once I know what issues you would like to deal with in a bit more detail I can provide you an estimate of how many sessions it will require. I offer weekly or bi-weekly sessions if it helps to spread out payment or you don't have as much time.
Is it confidential?
The trust between client and Counsellor is crucial. I treat all infomation disclosed as confidential, following the guidelines laid down by the BACP.
What are your fees?
- 1 HOUR Session £50
- 2 HOUR Power Session £90
